It's been an interesting experience for me since starting blogging, way back, when. I've moved platforms twice so far, and now again for a third time, my general photographic musings for the time being shall shift to, my tumblr, until, some other platform with superior qualities comes along.

This weekend I had some hardware failures. And because some technology has moved forward, ie firewire 400, I've had to rethink my approach to organising my digital files which until now, was doing fine.
Luckily no data has been lost, just the means of access has been made less convenient. Now, I need to weigh up how much digital content I need to carry everywhere, i.e. all classes and for personal use, and how much can just sit at home and be used and accessed from there?
My music collection has of course grown exponentially too, and it is now at the point where I can only use it in its entirety on some kind of disk. It is sitting at the 200gig mark.
So; two thoughts are now running through my mind. I have a large photographic project/idea that I want to shoot on film that I've been waiting to get the ball rolling on, and I've lost a bit of interest in many aspects of my cyber online image making, compounded by the usual disk space/hardware issues we are all plagued with. Do I try and juggle both, or focus on one to the detriment of the other?To add fuel to the fire, I am reading 'On Being A Photographer, David Hurn in conversation with Bill Jay'. This is more than fortuitous, and ratifies my desire to start the new project.
The light at this time of year is unbeatable, and, I know now is the time to start this new project so I feel that this is where my energies will now head. Mind you, the project is not intended to be completed for some years, so who knows, maybe I can keep a foot in both camps for a while yet.
Recently I discovered, quite by accident, that I had my flickr stream removed from public searches. This is affectionately know as being NIPS'd. My view count on my flckr stream had dropped quite dramitically over the last month and I was perplexed as to why. To the point where I was questioning my continuation of my flickr account. Now that I have resolved the issue regarding the public searches, my views have returned to the state they had been at for most of the time I've ben on flickr, since the stats were introduced. This is a worry as this means, that, the majority of my views come from these searches. Should I care? Should I use this as an excuse to re-focus my energies elsewhere? We'll see.

SoFoBoMo is short for Solo Photo Book Month - a group event where a bunch of photographers all make solo photo books start to finish in 31 days.
SoFoBoMo 2010 is running from 1st June to 31st July.
Today, I have begun the ball rolling for two projects, an application for a PhD, and a show at the CCP. The show application, will focus on a body of work, I shot recently and may form a larger project, over time; one day a book I hope. The PhD, is at such an early developmental stage, I am reading a book that will help me decide where to go., the book is entitled, The Craft of Research. It has already proved to be a great help.

My admiration of Mr. Adams is well known by those who know me well enough, this essay I stumbled upon on AMERICANSUBURB X is yet another glimpse at Mr Adams creative output adding to the already impressive body of written work about him that exists. It is just a pity it took me 8 years to find this one. Something that I've now come to take for granted is the speed and frequency of readily available information out there on my favourite subject Art Photography. Obviously this wasn't the case in 2002.
I was disappointed, that I missed, buying the Canon G10 in 2008, I hunted high and low for it in late 2009, to no avail. I purchased the G11 early this year and, I'm much happier anyway. Noise levels are reduced in this model, according to the specs and the banter on forums like dpreview.com
Unfortunately due to the awful lighting conditions this time of year, I've not been able to shoot a great deal, to really get some results from it.
Interesting too, note that Canon, list it in the “Museum;” already?

Photography Gallery, Level 3
[In 1967, the NGV established the first separate curatorial Department of Photography in an Australian art gallery and since that time we have delivered a continuous program of exhibitions and publications featuring the rich history of photography. The heart of our activities is based on the permanent collection which now numbers over 15,000 photographs, of which 3,000 works are by international artists. This year marks the 40th anniversary of our first acquisitions to the collection and, as such, it is timely to ‘re-view’ what has been achieved. National Gallery of Victoria]
I will be visiting this exhibition over the coming months I hope to use it for some inspiration in at least blogging, we shall see.
At this time of year , I spend my days at work interviewing, prospective new students, for my day job, teaching photography at PIC photographic imaging college. Over and over again I see the same problems with folios and folio presentation.
One of the easiest avoided mistakes is the orientation of your prints. So so many people mix their verticals and horizontals in a way that makes the viewer/interviewer rotate the book 90° my first tip on presenting a folio or body of photographic or any 2d art works for that matter is to insert the images in your folio/book in a consistent manner.
This poorly drawn diagram shows how to present correctly, as opposed to the image beneath it.
This is the simplest and cheapest way to present yourself professional, regardless of the cost or type of method you choose to present your work.
The actual container for your work be it leather bound portfolio or cheap plastic K-Mart equivalent, would be best chosen carefully according to your budget and the audience who is viewing the work. The more you spend however, the more polished and finished a body of work can look, after spending all that time and effort making the images and getting them printed, a poorly presented book or portfolio can bring everything to crashing halt. Ultimately, your choice will driven by budget followed by audience, unless you can afford to spend a lot of cash on a presentation book or method.
Layout & Sequencing
A real professional will see the connections between images beyond putting all your studio portraits in order followed by all your favourite location shoots or Landscapes. Think carefully about the order and sequence you use in your folio. Are there for example a series of colours that relate, perhaps complimentary or contrasting? Are they ideas within the images that repeat, or shapes even? Treat the body of work as a visual journey with highs and lows, surprises and delights. Use spreads or blank pages to add pauses in that journey, or like punctuation in a sentence.
Clean 'n tidy
At the very minimum, use as many precautions as possible to keep the work unblemished and free of dirt pet hair and other unwanted imperfections. These things give huge clues, to who you are as a person, and your attention to detail, all key factors in gaining entry into either a college or getting a job, especially getting a job.
While this approach is foisted upon, younger students, VCE students for example, it is only really necessary if, 'process' forms part of the idea you are exploring. Again, be fastidious in your work methods, unless the methods are about NOT being fastidious, how you organise this kind of work, and present it gives huge insights into you and your approach to making images.

Eastman House is not only re-running the New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-altered Landscape, from 1975; but this exhibition, entitled, Nature as Artifice: New Dutch Landscape in Photography and Video Art
The description “Dutch landscape” may evoke an idyllic vision reminiscent of Dutch landscape paintings, but today the Netherlands is known for its planned, manipulated landscape. In the last two decades a number of Dutch photographers and filmmakers have taken contemporary Dutch landscape and nature as their point of departure. George Eastman House presents a major survey of this new work, titled Nature as Artifice: New Dutch Landscape in Photography and Video Art, on view June 13 through Aug. 16. It is a companion show to the Eastman House summer exhibition New Topographics, originally mounted in 1975, illustrating the profound influence of that exhibition on the generations that have followed.

Blurb now allows you to upload a pdf for publication. Using their own templates is part of the process, but I always found their software slow and clunky on my computer.
And it is rumoured that the colour quality is better from them compared to lulu.com, too.
So look out.
Getting organised for the collection of Broadcast Media, using my eyeTV, and g5, I decided my archived CDs needed re-organising, it turns out I've been using a digital camera of some shape or form since 1999, 10 years folks, 10 years! I've been scanning longer of course, but as negatives, they need not be archived via CD. If you count 1998 as my start year in serious photography, this means over half of my time making images have been spent using a digital camera!
Of course 1/2 way though 2008, I got my 'DET leased' laptop that actually has a DVD burner, so that'll slow things down.
Not sure where external drives are going to fit into the equation, nor 'the cloud'.

It's been a while since I did this.
It's no coincidence that I uploaded 2 mophone shots. Looking at my 'organiser' on flickr, I see a few shots, around April 2007, where I remember beginning to think about using a phonecam in a more concentrated and excuse the pun focused way.
*Attention only to perfection, however, invites eventually for urban viewers — which means most of us — a crippling disgust; our world is in most places far from clean. Photographs that suggest an Arcadian landscape are recognisable from the city dweller's perspective as partial visions, and they make us uneasy. We feel defencelessness against what we will encounter on the street. How can trees in a National Park save us from the concrete-and-glass brutalities of a BIG city? The answer is, in simple emotional terms at least, that they cannot; to be reminded of the trees makes city streets seem worse.

This exhibition focuses on a collection of 9,000 picture postcards amassed and classified by the American photographer Walker Evans (1903-1975), now part of the Metropolitan's Walker Evans Archive.
The picture postcard represented a powerful strain of indigenous American realism that directly influenced Evans's artistic development. The dynamic installation of hundreds of American postcards drawn from Evans's collection will reveal the symbiotic relationship between Evans's own art and his interest in the style of the postcard.
This is also demonstrated with a selection of about a dozen of his own photographs printed in 1936 on postcard format photographic paper. Accompanied by a publication.
Postcards and books I've always found interesting, there's something delightful about an image designed to sit on your fridge, or just dash off a quick note to friends elsewhere.

The tyranny of distance, and idea proposed by, Geoffrey Blainey, is to some extent still in place, and sometimes the internet amplifies it, other times it diminishes it. Sometimes, both.
These exhibitions all look interesting, I found out about them via the internet, but of course it is not possible for me to visit any of them.

- The list on this page just makes me weep, I would so love to see more of Emmet Gowin's work in the flesh. And on and on and on....
Of course seeing screen versions of these images, if the galleries in question have an online exhibition, in no way replaces the experience of seeing them in the flesh.
