Yes it's a good tool, I'd say. I've been wondering about the state of play for a while now.

I started with a Toshiba and Picasa and moved to a MacBook and Lightroom. Picasa will keep on being improved and refined. I still use the former-as a sorting mechanism for my digital photographs-- for sending images by email and as a gallery.
