Equipment Arguments

Part of the article I linked to yesterday talked about gear, here's another read that takes the photographic gear argument even further, and in the right direction I might add. Not that gear should be the, "be all and end all" of good photography heaven forbid.

you know I have one lens for my blad one for my 5x4, and rarely consider buying anything other than a "normal" for any camera i buy, add in a tripod, a good spot-meter, and I'm set, all I need is good light and something to point my gear at and hey presto, if all the other factors are in play.

barb:

it's an old discussion, the what's the best gear to get-one.
I agree with K Rockwell that people get too hung up on brands and hardware. I think one reason for that may be, that we have perfect control over what to buy but very little control over the quality of the images we take.
It takes so much practice, time and not least talent to take pictures that stand out and I think some people try to compensate for lack of that by concentrating on gear instead. They shift the focus on something where there's total control, forgetting that without a vision their pictures will still turn out bland no matter how much of a camera and lens expert they become.

I remember seeing people on flickr who had vast and impressive collections of cameras and when I excitedly went to check out their flickr streams, there was really nothing to see there. That always leaves me a bit confused.
